Every piping system, no matter how well designed, is only as strong as the point where two lengths of tube meet. That's where copper fittings come in. They're the small, often overlooked components that turn straight lengths of copper tube into a working network routing flow around corners, splitting it into branches, stepping it down to a smaller diameter, or simply closing it off at the end of a run.
Because a single weak joint can undermine an entire system, choosing the right copper fitting for the job matters just as much as choosing the right tube. What are Copper Fittings?
Copper fittings are precision-manufactured components used to connect, redirect, branch, reduce, or terminate copper tube within a piping system. While a copper tube carries the flow, copper fittings are what make a continuous, sealed network possible; every elbow, junction, and tie-in point in the system runs through one.
Unlike the tube itself, which is a simple hollow cylinder, copper fittings are shaped to a purpose. An elbow changes direction, a tee creates a branch, a reducer transitions between two tube sizes, and so on. Most copper pipe fittings are manufactured by casting or forging wrought copper alloy, then machining the ends to accept tube via a socket (also called a "cup") sized to a precise tolerance tight enough to allow capillary action to draw molten solder or brazing filler evenly around the joint.
The dimensional accuracy of a copper fitting's socket is just as critical as the accuracy of the tube it receives. Too loose, and the joint won't fill properly with filler metal; too tight, and the tube won't seat fully.
